The song Anica Kesor Botoma has a deep meaning particularly because it features the Khmer music instrument called Sralai that I believe was played as early as the Angkor Period. This instrument used to play in the Khmer Pin Peath orchestra or Mahori orchestra that were used to perform in the Khmer religious ritual especially to worship various Hindu god and later performed in the Khmer Buddhist Pagoda. According to my observation of the timbre of this instrument, the Sralai has the tone quality similar to an instrument in India called shehnai that according to the legend, the Shehnai came from the word "King Flute" that the Shah king of Iran ordered to modify the snake charming instrument Pungi so that it fit to the royal court. Another observation is that the Sralai instrument were often featured in the Khmer theme music for various film during the 60s and 70s to express the Khmer traditional legend related to various Hindu gods or the story related to the Royal dynasty or even the folktale that has deep rooted in the Khmer culture. |
